The natural energy and appealing climate of this city are just two of the elements that contribute to the ever-growing population of the ‘city of gold’. Situated in the East of South Africa, this home to over 6 million people is a busy, lively place to visit.
Things to see and do:
-Apartheid Museum-An educational yet invaluable experience, this museum shows how the memory of history continues to have a strong presence in everyday life of the city.
- Planetarium-The planetarium, situated within the University of Witwatersrand has become increasingly popular with tourists to the city over the years. The university is also home to a stunning collection of African art for the less scientific visitor.
- Nightlife-Music is the focus for a large part of Johannesburg’s nightlife, with almost every genre on offer to satisfy the most diverse of music interests. A passion for a good party provides a lively and unforgettable night out.
Getting there: Johannesburg International Airport is situated 22km east of the city. A taxi can be taken from the arrivals area of the airport and can take between 30 to 45 minutes to reach the city centre. Alternatively, a short walk to a nearby hotel will find a shuttle bus service that tends to be a better option for the traveler on a budget.
Location and weather: The early part of the year can see temperatures reach uncomfortable heights and so the best time to go is the mid to October period of the year. The winter sees temperatures plummet and it is not rare for them to reach freezing point.
Top tip: Despite stories surrounding safety, it is generally thought that if tourists keep their wits about them, there is only a minimal need for concern.
