A warm and inviting city, Durban sits on the Indian Ocean. Its eclectic mix of architecture that ranges from Hindu temples to sky scraper buildings provides a back drop for a city equally diverse.
Things to see and do: -The ‘Golden Mile Beach’-This area of beach spreads 6km along the coastline and is bordered by flea markets and promenades. It is also overlooked by many of the cities main hotels, making it one of the most popular areas to enjoy the warm waters of the ocean.
- Francis Farewell Square- If a combination of history, culture and entertainment is what you are after then look no further than ‘Francis Farewell Square’. It is surrounded by museums, galleries and weekly entertainment of music, song and dance.
-Food-With Indian and European influences ever-present in the city, it is no wonder that the food available in this area of South Africa is equally rich in culture. Sit by the beach and enjoy a curry or a seafood dish, the range in options is something worth exploring to make your evenings worthwhile.
Getting there: Being one of South Africa’s main cities, there are many direct international flights to and from its airport that is situated just 16km south of the city centre. An airport bus runs between 6am and 9pm and taxis are available all day, conveniently waiting just outside the main entrance.
Location and weather: Situated on the east coast of South Africa, Durban appreciates a hot and sunny climate from December to April, though the rest of the year is mild. Facing the Indian Ocean, it is not surprising that the city is popular with tourists in the summer.
Top tip: A ride in a rickshaw is a cheap and entertaining way to take in the sights of the city.
