Edinburgh is the first city of Scotland and is a buzz of culture, business, politics and industry. The city is built on seven hills and has a craggy landscape. The city is divided into two sections, Old Town which is centred around Castle Rock and New Town. Edinburgh is lively during the day and even livelier during the night, it is a great backdrop to a city break.
Things to do and see:
-Edinburgh Castle – One of the cities most popular tourist attractions and key to the history of Scotland. The Castle is currently used as a military establishment but in the past has been a royal residence and prisoner of war camp.
-Edinburgh Zoo – The Zoo is great for a family day out, covering over 80 acres and housing over 1,600 animals you can come into contact with many endangered species as well as more traditional animals.
- Scotch Whiskey Heritage Centre – Think of Scotland and you think of whiskey, the scotch whiskey heritage centre takes you on a tour of the history of Scotland and how the association with whiskey was formed.
-Nightlife – The nightlife in Edinburgh is extensive with many late night pubs and clubs hosting live music events – there is also a great club scene if you want to party into the morning.
Getting there: Edinburgh airport is located approximately 25 minutes from the centre of the city. Taxi’s are available from outside the airport but could be costly, as an alternative there is an express bus service from the airport to the city centre which runs around every 10 minutes.
Location and weather: Edinburgh is located in the North of the United Kingdom on the East Coast of Scotland. Although Edinburgh is on a similar latitude to Moscow, it is not especially cold but is cool and temperate.
Top tip: Scotland is commonly associated with drinking and they refer to pubs as ‘Howffs’.
