London is the capital of the United Kingdom and as such is the heart of the country’s political and social scene. The first city is seen as a composition, hip and trendy place to be and is very popular with younger visitors. There is much to do for all ages however; whether you like shopping, the theatre, want to see the sights, listen live music or simply enjoy some fabulous and exotic cuisine. London has a lot to offer; negotiate the busy underground network and enjoy a fun filled trip.
Things to do and see:
- Buckingham Palace – You cannot visit London without a trip to see the Queen, or at least where she lives. Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the Queen and you can take guided tours around certain areas of the palace. You can also witness the infamous Changing of the Guard which happens daily in the Summer and every other day in the Winter at 11.30am.
- Madame Tussaurds – The world famous wax museum is one of London’s busiest tourist attractions and is your chance to join celebrities, sports stars and world leaders in almost the flesh. With shows, themed rooms and activities for all ages it is a great place for a family day out.
- The London Eye – Also named the Millennium Wheel, was erected in 1999 and was the first and is the largest observation wheel in the world. It is a great way to see the city from a great height, though not one for the faint hearted.
- Leicester Square – In the heart of London, Leicester square is a key point for tourists, and arguably comes alive at night, there is a park, film premieres, street entertainment, late night cafés, street entertainers, nightclubs and restaurants to visit. It is also minutes away from Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus and China Town.
Getting there: London is easily accessible from four international airports, Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted and all four airports have great transport links into the city. There are express train services from the airports to the city, buses, taxi’s and of course the tube.
Location and weather: London is located in the South of the UK and enjoys warm weather compared to much of the North. London has little rainfall too in comparison with most of the UK and temperatures reach the mid 20’s in the summer months.
Top tip: No trip to London is complete without a tour on one of the famous red Double Decker buses. Open top buses are available in the summer and come with guided tours of the city.
