You'll find it hard to get bored in Madrid, the capital of Spain, with its never-ending nightlife, impressive buildings, galleries, shops and history. Situated smack bang in the centre of Spain, Madrid is somewhere to stop off or spend weeks in – so long as you love fun, sun and action!
Things to see and do:
- Go and see the legendary Real Madrid play at the Bernabéu stadium, which is just a Metro ride away from the centre of town in Santiago Bernabéu. Don't forget to buy tickets in advance.
- Bullfights - The most famous bullfight in Spain, the San Isidro, takes place in Madrid in May and June. You should buy tickets to this well in advance, but if you don't fancy the actual bullfight then there are plenty of accompanying street festivals to enjoy instead.
- There are three great art museums in Madrid on the Abono Paseo del Arte (the Avenue of Art), including the Museo del Prado which is the biggest and most famous of the three.
- Tablaos - are flamenco bars which serve food while you watch a flamenco performance on a stage. Ask a local which tabalo is currently putting on the best show.
Getting there:
Madrid Barajas Airport is well equipped and well connected so that you can either travel on to other Spanish destinations with internal flights, get a coach or a train, or simply catch a shuttle bus or the metro to Madrid city centre.
Location and weather:
Madrid gets extremely hot in the summer, and large digital displays show the temperature on most street corners (just to rub it in). Thankfully humidity levels stay fairly low as the city has mountain ranges on three sides which provide fresh winds and clear the inner city smoke.
Top tip:
After a long night out stop off for an indulgent Spanish breakfast of chocolate and churros. The hot chocolate is so thick it's almost a mousse and churros – deep fried dough sticks – are deliciously naughty.
