Food
Spain has never been renowned for its food, and certainly it’s no Italy or France. But unless you’re a hardcore gourmet, you can eat perfectly well in Spain (it’s still a lot better than Britain), and fairly cheaply. Paella, gazpacho, chorizo and tortilla are among the most famous dishes, but there are also distinct regional cuisines with a huge number of different dishes to try. The classic Spanish way is to eat tapas with a beer or a glass of sangria – if nothing else, it’s a great way of trying a bit of everything.

Scorchio. Well, not quite. In the far south, it’s pretty much always sunny and always warm. The further north you go, the more likely you are to encounter showers and gloom in the autumn and winter – Bilbao and Barcelona are the most likely offenders of the destinations featured here.

With the advent of budget airlines, you should always be able to get a cheap flight to Spain from the UK; if you book enough in advance and are flexible about destinations, you might end up paying the airport tax and nothing else. Last minute deals will be more expensive, as will peak season (school holiday) flights to big tourist destinations like Malaga and Alicante.
