The Algarve is the Southern region of mainland Portugal and is home to cities such as Faro, Lagos and Silves. The region boasts clean warm beaches, a wonderful Mediterranean climate and is easily accessible at a relatively low cost. The Algarve is a very popular holiday destination and is perfect for family holidays and summer sun.
Things to do and see:
- The Municipal Museum of Silves – This Museum in Silves was erected to commemorate Silves and The Voyage of Discoveries and includes many historical and archaeological finds.
- Ria Formosa Lagoon – A nature reserve which covers over 170 kilometres. It is a hive of natural activity and is home to many exotic birds.
- Faro Cathedral - Look past the plain whitewashed exterior of the cathedral and venture inside to view a mix of marble statues, paintings and wooden carvings. There is also an excellent view of Faro from the Cathedral.
- The Castle of Aljezur – The was built in the 10th Century and was constructed to protect the citizens of the town from enemy attack. The Castle is located on top of a hill which overlooks a creek inhabited by man since the Iron Age.
Getting there: Faro International Airport known as the gateway to The Algarve it is small but incredibly busy and is located near to the city centre. There are bus services and many taxis available to get you to your destination.
Location and weather: The Algarve has a wonderful climate, with summer temperatures reaching 40 degrees and Winter temperatures never dropping below zero.
Top tip: Board a boat and sail down the Arade River on a traditional route that has been popular for thousands of years.
