Valletta is the capital city of Malta, hailed as the City of Knights it remains a tribute to the men who built it. The city boasts two harbours and which can be cruised around at minimal cost. Valletta is a wonderful city for those interested in history, wonderful art and magnificent architecture.
Things to do and see:
- St John’s Co-Cathedral – Commissioned in 1572 and built between the years 1573 and 1578, this magnificent Cathedral is a must see when visiting Valletta. The Church is open to visitors between the hours of 9-4 and home to some magnificent and important works of art.
- The Grand Masters Palace – The city of Valetta was built by the Knights of St John there are many museums and places to visit to learn more of the countries legacy. The Grand Masters Palace is a great place to start, it was originally the home of the knights and is now the residence of Malta’s Parliament.
- Grand Harbour – Take a trip to the grand harbour where you will find a hub of activity and get to experience Valletta in action. There are also excellent views of the rest of the city.
- Auberges of the Knights – Visit these magnificent buildings spectacular both inside and out to see where the knights previously used to reside.
Getting there: Valletta is the main International airport base in Malta and as such boasts excellent transport links to both Valetta City Centre and the rest of Malta. There is a regular bus service, trains and taxis available.
Location and weather: Valletta has excellent weather particularly in the summer months when temperatures are in the early 30’s and rainfall is practically non exsistant.
Top tip: Visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens to take a stroll in tranquil surroundings.
