With medieval streets, imperial squares, palaces and majestic architecture, Vienna is a wonderful place for those wanting to experience the culture and history of this impressive city in Europe. Vienna is modern, safe and clean and is great for a weekend break for two or a longer holiday for all of the family.
Things to do and see:
- The Anchor Clock Tower (Ankeruhr) – The Clock Tower is situated within in main square of Vienna. It was built between the years 1911 and 1917 and is an wonderful example of Art Nouveau design.
- The National Theatre (Burgtheater) – The National Theatre is located in the first district. The theatre boasts an excellent array of cultural events and many famous actors have visited to perform. It is well worth checking what is showing at the time you visit.
- The Albertina Graphic Arts Collection – The art collection boasts some of the most impressive graphics in the world with over 60,000 paintings and a million graphical reproductions.
- Skiing – Unknown to most who visit this city there are many ski resorts within travelling distance of the city. Visit Hohe Wand Wiese and Gastein for some wonderful slopes.
Getting there: Vienna International Airport is located around 20 minutes from the city centre. There is a regular train service connecting the city and the airport which costs around 3 Euros. There is also an excellent bus service and taxi’s available from the arrivals gate.
Location and weather: Summers in Vienna are cool and hot and often reach uncomfortable temperatures in July and August. Winters are cold and temperatures often fall below zero.
Top tip: Try taking a day trip to Salzburg of Graz, both cities are easily accessible from Vienna and are great for a change of scene. |
