With over 150 canals and beautiful buildings set on every street, it is hard not to fall in love with romantic Venice. Escape the crowds by exploring the various alley ways and back streets, the perfect opportunity to lose yourself for the day.
Things to see and do:
-. Piazza San Marco-This square plays host to the stunning, ‘Basilica of San Marco’, otherwise known as the ‘Church of Gold.’ If this amazing sight is not satisfying enough, there are restaurants, coffee houses and shops all surrounding the square.
-Gondolas-Although very expensive, a trip to Venice is not complete without a ride in a gondola. Many of the boats travel down the ‘Grand Canal’, giving one of the most romantic and relaxing ways to see the sights of the city.
-Seafood-It is hard to find a restaurant in Venice that does not sell seafood, in fact finding something apart from this to eat is probably harder! Make the most of the availability and sample some of Venice’s culinary delights whilst in the city.
Getting there: The ‘Marco Polo Airport’ is served by international flights and at 12km away from the city centre is Venice’s main airport. A bus takes just 25 minutes to get to the city and is a cheap option compared to the more expensive taxi.
Location and weather: Typical of many of Italy’s cities, Venice, set along the coastline in the north-east of Italy, is uncomfortably hot in the summer and the humidity often drives locals away. The Spring is the best time to go though it is not unusual to experience showers of rain at any time of the year.
Top tip: A water taxi from the airport to the city centre may seem like a good idea but prices are generally very high.
