Set in the region of Tuscany, Pisa has a lively atmosphere, largely due to the body of students that populate the city. It is suitably positioned only 13km from the sea and offers plenty to see and do.
Things to see and do:
-The Leaning Tower of Pisa-A visit to this city is certainly not complete without a visit to this famous tower. For those fit enough, it is possible to walk the steps inside to the very top. The stunning view over the city is surely reason enough to brave the steep walk!
-Arno River-Running directly through the city, it is hard to miss this river, however it is worth taking some time to see it properly. Lined with beautiful houses and historic buildings, a gentle stroll next to the water is an ideal way to absorb some of the more relaxed aspects of Pisa.
-Night life-Live music is very popular in this area of Italy and can be enjoyed at many of the lively friendly bars that populate the city. For those looking for some slightly more formal entertainment, the ‘Verdi Theatre’ offers opera, drama and dance as well as stunning interior.
Getting there: Just 1km from the city, ‘Galileo Galilei International Airport’ is the most convenient place to fly to. Both trams and buses connect the city to the airport and are a cheaper alternative to the more expensive taxi.
Location and weather: Typically Mediterranean, Pisa is generally warm and sunny during the summer months and cooler and wetter in the winter. Temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius in July and August, though it is not surprising for this to be interrupted by a spell of rain from time to time.
Top tip: The ‘Piazza dei Cavalier’ is transformed by an open market every second Sunday of the month (except July and August.) If you are lucky enough to be in Pisa on one of these Sundays, make the most of the opportunity as the market has a buzzing atmosphere as well as an endless supply of souvenirs.
