Bologna is possibly the most beautiful Italian city. Over the years is has been carefully preserved to maintain its stunning architecture and will continue to be maintained due to the city’s policy. The city centre is encircled by ancient walls and the city itself then surrounded by rolling hills. You will find piazzas, churches, museums and an abundance of café’s restaurants and bars. The city is also famed for its many festivals and events.
Things to see and do:
- Piazza Maggiore – surrounded by some of the cities stunning renaissance architecture and monuments.
- University Quarter - this blooming graduate district is a great place to stop and observe the goings on in a local bar or café.
- Basilica di San Petronio – this immense church is Bologna’s largest. The chapels inside include beautiful frescos by Jacopo di Paolo and Giovanni da Modena.
- Torre degli Asinelli and Torre degli Garisenda – Pisa is not the only Italian city to accommodate famous leaning towers, Bologna has two. You can climb the steps of the taller of the two, Torre degli Asinelli and marvel at the city’s views.
Getting there:
The airport Guglielmo Marconi, is just 3.5 miles north of the city centre. From here you can catch the 20minute ATC Aerobus ride to the city centre. Taxi and car hire are also available.
Location and weather:
Bologna sits in between Florence and Venice on the North East of Italy. The summer temperatures peak at around 27°c and the winter months around 15°c.
Top tip:
Like with many Italian cities, events and festivals take place throughout the year. Some months there many music festivals others months there are more culinary events, either way you are sure to experience at least some kind of event during your visit .
