Arguably the romance capital of the world, Paris is a great place to go for a weekend trip or a longer stay. There's so much to do, and although Paris can be quite expensive, if you do your research and book accommodation in advance and your flights online, you'll be able to spend more of your budget in the great shops and restaurants!
Things to see and do:
- The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon to commemorate the Revolution. You can go to the top of the arch and marvel at the geometric wonders of the traffic planning.
- Notre Dame - Paris's famous cathedral, built in the Gothic style and vast enough to hold 6000 people, is essential visiting.
- Centre Pompidou - This art museum was built in the seventies – if you like innovative architecture and cutting edge art then head here for the day.
- Eiffel tower – built to commemorate the anniversary of the French Revolution, for a time the ‘Tour Eiffel’ was the world’s tallest building. You can go up this iconic structure and get a great view of the city.
- The Louvre is one of the world’s most famous art museums. It contains an overwhelming number of artworks so really requires a whole day to visit properly.
Getting there:
Paris Charles de Gaulle airport is twenty-seven miles north of Paris and is modern and well equipped, handling hundreds of international and domestic flights every day. To connect to the city you can choose between car hire, shuttle buses, regular buses or taxis, and likewise if you are flying into Paris to visit a neighbouring town then there are good connections from the city's six train stations. Other Paris Airports d'Orly and Beauvais host fewer flights but are still modern, well equipped and well connected.
Location and weather:
Paris is in central northern France, midway between Strasbourg on the German border and Brest on Brittany’s Atlantic coast, and around 150 miles south of Calais. Famously pleasant in the spring, Paris’s climate is nonetheless more fickle than the southern half of the country – summers are warm and dry though.
Top tip:
Don’t go anywhere near Paris on Bastille Day (14th July) without booking your accommodation well in advance, or you’ll be sleeping on the boulevards.
