Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and as such is a hub of activity, there is always something to do in this cosmopolitan city which seems to never sleep. Those after a quieter stay can find much tranquillity however in the suburbs of the city where small family run, traditional Bulgarian hotels can cater for your every need.
Things to do and see:
-Historical Sights – include The St George Rotunda which is a large archaeological site with ruins dating back to the Romans. The Boyana Church is also a must see. It is a UNESCO listed building and is a breathtaking sight boasting stunning wall paintings.
- Shopping – Shopping in Bulgaria is cheap and cheerful, with bustling markets selling inexpensive souvenirs and cut priced goods. For the more serious shopper, you will also find small boutiques selling genuine designer goods at much lower prices than in the UK. Beware of the black market however with fake designer goods and pirate CD’s and DVD’s selling all over the city.
- Nightlife – You will never be stuck for something to do in Sofia with choices at night including operettas, theatres, jazz clubs, nightclubs to rival Europe’s best and Casino’s which are open till dawn.
- Mount Vitosha – If you fancy a day away from the big city, Mount Vitosha is just a short bus ride away. It is a great spot in the summer for a stroll and a picnic and catches much snow in the winter so you can enjoy a day of skiing.
Getting there: There is a regular public bus service linking Sofia Airport with the city, hotel’s often operate shuttles too. Alternatively, a taxi from the airport into the city will cost around 6 leva/ 3-4 Euros.
Location and weather: Sophia is located in the West of Bulgaria and is cold in the winter making it perfect for skiing. Summer is the best time to visit if not for skiing as humidity is low and temperatures are around 24 degrees Celsius on average.
Top tip: Beware of the many Bulgarians often have the confusing habit of nodding when they mean no and shaking their head when they mean yes.
