Home of the European Union and NATO, Brussels is often seen as the Capital of Europe and as you would expect is multicultural and diverse to match. The city is built upon wonderful architecture and boasts over 80 museums and a fabulous nightlife. Brussels is wonderful for a weekend getaway.
Things to do and see:
- The Atomium – The Atomium was built in 1958 and shows a cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. You can enter the walls of the cells and windows inside the spheres offer a wonderful panoramic view of Brussels.
- Mini-Europe – Take the opportunity to visit Mini Europe, which contains mini replicas of many famous European monuments such as Big Ben, The Eiffel Tower and The Berlin Wall.
- The Basilica of the Sacred Heart – This church is a wonderful place to visit,it the fifth largest church in the world and boasts magnificent architecture. The church is a wonderful example of Art Deco.
- Jeanneke Pis and Manneken Pis – These male and females counterpart fountains. The female shows a woman contently urinating whist the male shows a young boy in a similar fashion. The fountains are very amusing to passers by.
Getting there: Brussels International Airport is located less than 20 minutes from the city centre. The Airport City Express links the airport and the city via bus with a one-way ticket costing as little as 3 Euros. There is also a local train service running from the airport and taxis available.
Location and weather: The weather in Brussels is characterised by rain with a high average annual rainfall and rain expected at any time. On the plus side however Winters are cool with snow uncommon and Summers mild.
Top tip: Take a stroll around on of Brussels magnificent parks such as Parc de Bruxelles.
