Less developed than Mallorca, Menorca is rich in history and picturesque woods and beaches, with a few stretches of package holiday villas too.
Things to see and do:
- Mao, the capital of Menorca is the place where mayonnaise was invented. It's fun with a handful of bars, cafes and accommodation - and great historic buildings and small squares where you can sit and while away the time and shelter from the sun in the heat of the day.
- Seafood - Menorca offers great dining opportunities with good seafood restaurants around the north west fishing villages like Fornells.
- Ciutadella is another harbour city on the east coast of Menorca boasting some lovely gothic architecture, a market and a museum full of Menorcan history.
Getting there:
The airport is in the west of the island near the capital Mao. It’s quite small and you'll have to get a taxi into town, but as it's only five kilometres the fare will be reasonable.
Location and weather:
Menorca is part of the Balearic Islands group off the east coast of Spain. The island is most temperate in June and September, but if you want to go for a scorching Mediterranean holiday then July and August are the hottest months - just remember to avoid the heat of the day.
Top tip:
Look up Lovers' Beach, so named because it's a tiny beach, only big enough to fit two sunbathers.
