This long-standing package holiday destination is great fun and easy to enjoy, with its friendly sand beaches and multitudes of restaurants, bars, clubs, outdoor swimming pools and sun. Mallorca's capital Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands, which include Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca.
Things to see and do:
- Palma - the capital is a thriving hub and shows Mallorca to be much more than a holiday destination. The city boasts great shopping opportunities, a port harbour and a great cathedral.
- Tapas bars are great places to go to while away an afternoon or evening, drinking beer and sampling tasters of local produce and specialities. These range from trendy youthful hubs to small traditional Spanish-style taverns.
- The Serra de Tramuntana is a mountain range in Northwest Mallorca which has scenic cliffs and plenty of orchards, and is good for hiking and coastal walks. Most of the beaches tend to be shingle though, so if you want sand then stay around the Palma resorts.
Getting there:
Mallorca has a well equipped airport eleven kilometres east of Palma with a tourist office and car hire facility, as well a bus connection service and a ready supply of taxis.
Location and weather:
The island is susceptible to storms in the hot months of July and August but mostly the weather remains baking hot in high summer and temperate in early summer and autumn. Mallorca is slightly further north than Ibiza and is on the same latitude as Valencia.
Top tip:
Make sure you arrange a hotel well in advance as Mallorca accommodation gets very booked up months in advance.
